Despite the score line LWC recovered well to give themselves a good chance to win a game, that they were losing 19 - 0 just after half time. We finally started playing with the tempo and accuracy required to put LFS under pressure and this produced the space to appear for Ned B to break from a ruck and run in from over 75 m. Sensible game management and concerted pressure were rewarded when Ben F completed a good passage of multiphase play to score and we were back in the game at 12 - 17.
The tide seemed to have turned permanently as Dan B was put away on the left before he inexplicably stepped into touch under minimal pressure on his way to the posts. This changed the momentum as well as affording LFS the chance to run down the clock. A characteristic aggressive carry from Ollie L closed the gap further to 19 - 17 and set up a tense final 7 minutes.
Despite having all the 'momentum', at completely the wrong time, errors crept back into the LWC game. Two will be remembered; firstly a telegraphed inside pass in the LWC 22 was intercepted and needed committed defending to prevent a try. Minutes later, with a chance to clear the ball down field LWC chose to pass, unfortunately poor execution allowed LFS to kick on and score, effectively finishing the match with the score 26 - 17. The final 4 minutes gave LFS time to capitalise on one final LWC error and stretch the lead with a penalty goal.
Despite some excellent individual efforts, and a patch of very good play. overall LWC did not match the commitment of LFS for too much of the game. The first half in particular. We were static in defense, and lacked aggression contesting the tackle ball. Adding individual errors and an inability to adapt to the referee to the mix meant it was always going to be hard. The recovery looked like it may be enough but would have been hard on an opposition side who deserved this one, despite being beatable.
