Match Report
Lord Wandsworth College Boys-U14C vs  Cranleigh School
On: Saturday, 02 Mar 2024
Venue: Away

Thanks to Will A who stepped up to keep goal and Charles A and Barney K who agreed to play at short notice. They all contributed to an entertaining game that was won deservedly by C, who were just a little bit more polished with their skills, look tactically more aware and regularly tested the goalie. For all their effort, LWC did not trouble the visitors defense as much as they would have liked.

More often than not the clearing ball was played through the congested middle of the field where it was collected by a C player who could continue the attack. When it did reach an LWC stick, the receiver often kept his head down, took multiple touches that invited a challenge and ended in LWC losing the ball. Because of this LWC rarely got the ball through the C defense in contrast to their opponents who were regularly playing runners through on goal. A early chance was taken by C and although LWC got one back through Max A, from a short corner, the greater threat offered by C meant they regained the lead and did not look like relinquishing it.

The second half followed the pattern of the first. There was some evidence that LWC had headed advice as they moved the ball toward half way quicker only too dwell too long in the C half. One ball in the Opponents D in the whole half told the story. Lower teams often lack the ability and skill to dominate play and those that do are quickly promoted. They need sound basic technique and team work if they are to compete better.
